Seminar – Evaluating flood impacts and adaptation options – tools and experiences

Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

In conjunction with QUT School of Economics, Professor Clevo Wilson has invited  Assistant Professor Hans de Moel – VU University, Amsterdam to  share his research and industry experience with a breadth of practitioner and academic colleagues.

Summary: In this overview presentation, Hans will detail the various impact analyses and evaluation of measures that he undertakes in the field of flood risk management, climate change and adaptation at the Institute for Environmental Studies.

He has a diverse experience having developed flood and risk models for Rotterdam, Amsterdam, New York City and Ho-Chi-Minh City. He uses these models to support risk-based decision making by evaluating various adaptation measures and strategies, assessing the impact of climate change and socio-economic growth, and investigates uncertainties and sensitivities of such assessments and subsequent decisions.

Applications include:

  • evaluating the indirect economic effects such as the cascading consequences of inter-connected infrastructure and utility services when inundated
  • resilience of infrastructure in a port setting
  • ways to best integrate  human decision making in flood risk models (using agent-based approaches).

Currently, Hans is involved in projects related to urban resilience to flooding, the development of a consistent flood risk estimation methodology in data-scarce regions and a project investigating the impact of human interventions on the hydrology of the Tana (Kenya) and subsequent effects on water resources and ecosystem services
