SUMMARY:Resilience of people and places to natural hazards – policy to action?
DESCRIPTION:In this era of reoccurring extreme weather events of floods\, fires\, cyclones and extended droughts\, our responsibility as professionals is to be a part of a process that provides resilient solutions in collaboration with local communities. \nJoin us at this interactive workshop where we plan to: \n\nconfirm why this is a fundamental need for our quality of life in Queensland;\nshowcase ways that residents can benefit from proactive local government engagement and support;\nexplore what creek bed and bank restoration can mean\, not only in reducing flood risk\, but also improving water quality\, local wildlife and property values;\nhear how building resilience\, can be a part of a proactive community engagement campaign;\nunderstand what having resilience means in terms of risk reduction for insurance.\n\n\n  \n \nHear from a mix of guest speakers: \n\nMark Drew – Queensland Reconstruction Authority\nPhil Young and Ouswatta Perrata – Brisbane City Council\nAdrian Volders – Australian Rivers Institute – Griffith University\nGreg Greene – SEQWater\nJoshua Conney – Suncorp\n\nPlus we will offer an opportunity for all participants to map the resilience experiences you are seeing in SEQ and what might be missing – bring your stories and evidence please. \nThe program for the afternoon is: \n\nFrom 1:30pm please register\, meet other participants from our diverse professional group and check out the examples of the resilience building initiatives on display\nStart promptly at 2:00pm and workshop together till 4:30pm.\nOn conclusion\, please stay on to discuss your ideas with the guest speakers\, meet other resilience building practioners\nEnjoy some refreshments from the Wild Earth Adventures team with Brisbane River views over a Friday sunset.
